Brightspace D2L Quizzes: Complete Student Guide (2026)
Brightspace by D2L (Desire2Learn) is used by thousands of colleges and universities worldwide. If your school uses Brightspace, here's everything you need to know about how quizzes work on the platform.
Understanding Brightspace Quiz Types
Brightspace supports two quiz engines: the Classic Quiz tool and the newer Quiz Experience. Both support standard question types but have slightly different interfaces. Your professor chooses which one to use.
Common question types on Brightspace: multiple choice (single and multi-select), true/false, matching, short answer, fill in the blank, ordering, and written response. Some professors also use image-based questions with diagrams.
How Brightspace Quizzes Are Structured
Brightspace loads quiz content inside nested iframes — a technical detail that matters because it makes Brightspace quizzes harder for generic tools to read. Most screenshot-based or copy-paste tools struggle with this structure.
QuizAce specifically handles Brightspace's iframe hierarchy by traversing nested frames to find and read quiz content directly.
Time Limits on Brightspace
Brightspace offers two types of time limits: enforced (quiz auto-submits when time expires) and recommended (timer shows but you can continue). Check which type your quiz uses — it changes your strategy significantly.
With enforced time limits, every second counts. An in-page tool that gives answers in 3 seconds is far more practical than switching tabs.
Attempt Settings
Professors can allow one or multiple attempts. When multiple attempts are allowed, Brightspace can keep the highest, lowest, first, last, or average score. Check your syllabus or quiz description for the grading policy.
Question Presentation Options
Brightspace can display all questions on one page or one question at a time. It can also shuffle question order and answer choices to prevent answer-sharing between students.
Does Brightspace Detect Cheating?
Brightspace has similar monitoring capabilities to Canvas:
- Quiz logs: Time started, time submitted, duration
- Tab switching: Can detect when you leave the quiz page
- IP address: Logged with each attempt
What Brightspace cannot detect: installed Chrome extensions, what's on your screen, your clipboard contents, or your browsing history. Read more in our guide on what professors can and cannot see.
Brightspace Safe Exam Browser
Some schools use Respondus LockDown Browser or Brightspace's own secure browser settings. These lock your desktop to the quiz window. However, most regular Brightspace quizzes do not use a locked browser — it costs money and requires IT setup.
Getting Quiz Answers on Brightspace
Because of Brightspace's nested iframe structure, most quiz tools don't work on D2L. QuizAce is one of the few that specifically supports Brightspace with its iframe traversal technology.
