Schoology Quiz Answers: How Results and Correct Answers Work

Schoology shows quiz answers only after you submit, and only if your teacher allows it. In Schoology Assessments, the setting is Allow students to view results after an attempt is submitted, with three choices: No, Yes (your answers, without the key) or Yes with correct answers. Classic Schoology Test/Quiz materials have an equivalent View Submissions setting. If you can see your score but not the answers, that setting is the reason. This guide explains both tools, where to find your results, and how to study for Schoology quizzes.

How Schoology quizzes work: Test/Quiz vs Assessments

Schoology, now part of PowerSchool's learning products, has two tools for graded quizzes, and a school may use either or both:

• Test/Quiz is the original course material type. PowerSchool's student guide lists its question types as true/false, multiple choice, ordering, short-answer/essay, fill in the blank and matching. Teachers can add up to 200 questions and write answer-level feedback plus separate correct and incorrect response feedback.
• Assessments is the newer engine with more question types (drag and drop, labeling images, math keyboards, drawing) and built-in tools such as flagging, eliminating answer choices, a notepad, a calculator and a ruler or protractor when the teacher enables them. Schools that use Assessments can convert existing tests and quizzes into it.

You can usually tell them apart by layout. Assessments show one question per page with question numbers along the bottom and a Review screen before you submit; PowerSchool's conversion notes confirm that all Assessments display one question per page and allow students to review answers before submitting. Test/Quiz materials use a simpler page and a Start New Attempt button.

Where the correct answers legitimately appear

• Your submitted attempt. After you submit, the quiz or assessment page lists your previous attempts. If the teacher allows it, you can open a completed attempt and see your answers, and with the right setting, the correct ones.
• Question feedback. Teachers can write feedback for each answer choice and for correct and incorrect responses. It is the most useful thing on a results page because it explains why.
• Practice quizzes. Many teachers post ungraded or low-stakes quizzes with unlimited attempts and Yes with correct answers turned on, precisely so you can learn from them.
• Your teacher. If answers are hidden, asking which topics you missed, in class or by message, is always allowed.

There is no legitimate way to see the answer key before submitting a graded quiz. Scoring happens on Schoology's servers and the settings decide what comes back to you.

Assessments: the student settings that control answers

PowerSchool's guide to configuring assessment settings lists three student settings:

• Allow students to view results after an attempt is submitted: No means you cannot review your results after completion. Yes means you can review your results, including the answer choices with your selected answer highlighted. Yes with correct answers adds the correct answers.
• Number of attempts a student can submit.
• Final grade is determined by: the highest or the most recent score when several attempts are allowed.

A detail that explains a lot of confusion: PowerSchool states these settings can be changed at any time and apply to past, in-progress and future attempts. Its own example is a teacher who keeps results on No while students are still taking the assessment, then switches to Yes with correct answers after everyone has finished and grading is done. So if you could not see answers yesterday, you may be able to today.

The same page lists the delivery settings that shape the attempt: a time limit (with automatic submission when it expires), random question order, whether point values are shown during the attempt, and an option to require Respondus LockDown Browser if your school uses it.

Test/Quiz: View Submissions

For classic Test/Quiz materials, PowerSchool's documentation covers creating and grading but not every option label. University help desks that support Schoology describe the setting this way: by default students cannot see which questions they got right or wrong; the teacher opens the test's Settings tab and sets View Submissions to Yes, or to Yes with correct answers to also reveal the key (see Point Park University's guide). Labels can vary slightly between Schoology versions, so treat the wording as a guide.

PowerSchool also notes that a Test/Quiz's availability defaults to Disable; if you can open a quiz but see no Start New Attempt button, the teacher has not enabled it yet.

What you see after submitting, by setting

PowerSchool's student guides note that grades for quizzes without subjective questions appear automatically in Grades, while short-answer and essay items wait for the teacher. In Assessments, the submissions page shows points earned per question and the total, so even without correct answers you can see exactly where you lost points.

Why teachers hide or delay Schoology answers

• Classmates are still testing. Different class periods often take the same quiz on different days. Releasing answers after the first period would let them spread, so teachers wait until every section has finished.
• Retakes. If you can take a quiz again, seeing the key after the first try turns the second try into copying. Plain Yes (your answers without the key) is a common compromise.
• Reused question banks. Teachers who build quizzes from the same bank every year may never release the key and go over results in class instead.

If your teacher moved a quiz from Test/Quiz to Assessments, a few things change with it. PowerSchool's conversion notes say Assessments do not support unlimited attempts (a converted quiz gets 20), questions pulled randomly from a question bank are not carried over, and every converted assessment shows one question per page.

How to find your results as a student

1. Open the course and select the quiz or assessment from Materials, the Upcoming feed, the Calendar or a notification.
2. For Assessments, find the Previous Attempts table. It lists each attempt with its status, time spent and last modified date. If you have permission to view submissions, select View on a completed attempt.
3. For Test/Quiz materials, open the quiz and look for your submitted attempts on the same page.
4. If there is no View option, the teacher has results set to No for now. Check back after the due date, or ask.

PowerSchool's student assessment experience page also notes that only one attempt can be in progress at a time and that in-progress attempts can be resumed, which matters if you get disconnected.

What teachers see

On the teacher side, Schoology catalogs results immediately in a Results area where they can review submissions by student or by question, see a question summary, grade subjective answers and unsubmit an attempt, according to PowerSchool's test and quiz results guide. Each Assessments attempt also carries its time spent and last-modified time. If a quiz requires Respondus LockDown Browser, PowerSchool's student guide explains that it opens in a restricted browser where menus and the address bar are removed. Your teacher will mention it in the quiz instructions.

How to study for Schoology quizzes

• Use practice quizzes with Yes with correct answers. These are the ones designed to teach you. Take them early, then again a few days later.
• Read the feedback, not just the key. Answer-level feedback tells you why a distractor is wrong, which is what helps on the next quiz.
• Track points lost per question. Even with results set to Yes, you can list the questions you missed and match each to a lesson or reading.
• Expect shuffled questions. With random order and question banks, learn the concept rather than the position of an answer.
• Use built-in tools on practice runs. Flagging and eliminating choices in Assessments are good habits to rehearse before a graded test.

AI study tools and Schoology
