The formula to calculate what you need on a final exam is:
Required Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Exam Weight)) / Exam Weight
Where all values are percentages expressed as decimals. For example: if your current grade is 82%, the final is worth 25% of your grade, and you want an 85% overall:
Required = (85 - 82 × 0.75) / 0.25 = (85 - 61.5) / 0.25 = 23.5 / 0.25 = 94%
You'd need a 94% on the final to bring your grade up to 85%.
What If I Need Over 100%?
If the calculator shows you need more than 100%, your desired grade isn't achievable with the final exam alone. Your options: ask about extra credit, aim for a slightly lower target, or focus on acing the final to get as close as possible.
Common Final Exam Weights
| Course Type | Typical Final Weight |
|---|---|
| Intro/Survey courses | 20–25% |
| Standard courses | 25–35% |
| STEM courses | 30–40% |
| Cumulative finals | 30–50% |
Grade Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate what I need on the final?
Use the formula: Needed Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90%, you need: (90 - 85 × 0.7) / 0.3 = 101.7%. Our calculator does this math instantly.
What if the calculator says I need over 100%?
If you need more than 100% on the final, it means reaching your desired grade may not be possible through the final exam alone. Consider whether extra credit is available or adjust your target grade.
How do I find the weight of my final exam?
Check your course syllabus — it should list the grading breakdown (e.g., "Final Exam: 30%"). If you can't find it, check your LMS gradebook or ask your professor.
Does this work for weighted grade categories?
This calculator works for a single final exam weight. If your grade has multiple weighted categories, calculate your current weighted average first, then use that as your "current grade" here.
