Best Coursology Alternatives for Students (2026)
Coursology is an all-in-one AI school app: a Chrome extension and iPhone app for instant answers, plus study tools, a lecture recorder and AI writing features, sold at $24.99 a month or $149.99 a year. The best alternative depends on which part you actually use. For instant answers at a lower price, Solvely and Quizard AI are the closest matches. For quizzes, flashcards and podcast-style summaries built from your own course files, Google's Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) covers most of the same ground with a regular Google account. For quiz questions read directly on your LMS page, an LMS page reader such as QuizAce is the fit. Below is what Coursology is today, then six alternatives compared on the same public facts.
Last verified: October 12, 2026 against the official documentation linked below.

What Coursology is today
If you search for Coursology you will find pages describing it as a way to organize courses from Udemy or Coursera. That is not the product. Coursology is an AI study app made by Coursology LLC, and in 2026 its website presents it as "the last app you need to get through school". It has three parts.
1. Instant answers (the original product)
This is what the Coursology Chrome extension does. You capture a question with one of three methods (an on-page button, a snapshot, or text selection) and get an answer with a step-by-step explanation underneath, plus a follow-up chat for questions about the topic. It covers math, chemistry, physics, biology, history and other subjects. The site's FAQ says the extension works on any learning platform and that Snapshot works on any web page; that is the nature of a capture tool, which reads what you select rather than integrating with a specific LMS.
On October 12, 2026 the listing showed 40,000 users and a 3.6 rating from 473 ratings. The current version, 1.2.6, was published on May 27, 2026, so the extension had gone about four and a half months without an update. The iPhone app, Answer App - Coursology AI, rates much better: 4.8 from about 4,600 ratings. It is iPhone-only on the App Store (the site also advertises an Android app).
2. Study tools built from your materials
You upload slides, PDFs, lecture recordings, YouTube links and textbooks, and Coursology builds practice quizzes with instant feedback, flashcards, mind maps and AI "podcasts" that turn your notes into audio. A lecture recorder transcribes classes into structured notes, and you can ask questions answered from your own uploads. This part is genuinely useful and is the main reason some students keep paying for it.
3. Writing features
The newest features are about writing: a "Discussion Post Drafter" extension that writes rough drafts of discussion posts and replies inside the LMS editor, an essay drafter that imitates your writing style from a paper you upload, AI autocomplete, a citation finder, and a "Humanizer" that rewrites text and shows a score for how AI-like it reads. These features are marketed around making AI-written text read as if a person wrote it. We do not evaluate or repeat those claims. The practical point is that many schools treat submitting AI-generated writing as your own work as an academic-integrity violation, whatever a detector says, so this part of the product carries the most risk for the student using it.
To be fair to Coursology, its own Academic Honesty page says the tool "is not intended to be used during exams or any other assessments that are designed to test your individual understanding", and asks students to use it as a study aid and cross-check its answers. That is sound advice for every tool in this article.
What Coursology costs
The pricing page lists one plan, unlimited access to every feature, at $24.99 a month, or $12.50 a month when you pay for 12 months (the App Store lists the yearly plan at $149.99). The iPhone app's in-app purchases also include weekly plans at $6.99 and $7.99 and a $59.99 yearly variant, which appear to be offers shown to some users. The extension listing says Pro removes "waits" and ads, which suggests a limited free mode, but no free allowance is published.
Why students look for a Coursology alternative
- Price. $24.99 a month is higher than any other monthly plan in this comparison. Even the yearly rate is about three times Solvely's yearly in-app price.
- Extension reliability. The 3.6 Chrome Web Store rating is low for this category, where most well-known tools sit between 4.7 and 5.0, and the extension had no update between late May and mid-October.
- Paying for features you do not use. Students who only want instant answers pay for podcasts and writing tools, and students who only want study tools pay for the answer engine.
- Course policy. Students whose courses ban AI-written discussion posts or essays may prefer a tool that does not center those features.

The alternatives in detail
Solvely: the closest like-for-like replacement
Solvely covers the same three jobs as Coursology's core (instant answers from a screenshot or photo, study tools such as flashcards and practice quizzes, and lecture recording with AI notes) at a much lower price. Its iPhone app lists $6.99 a week, $12.99 a month and $46.99 for a full year. The SolvelyAI extension had 100,000 users and a 4.7 rating, and it was updated on October 6, 2026. It adds a "Solve All" button for every problem on screen and YouTube and webpage summaries. The iPhone app has about 41,000 ratings averaging 4.8. Gemini Notebook: study tools from your own files
If the part of Coursology you value is "dump the whole class in" and study from it, Google's research notebook, renamed from NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026, does most of it. According to Google's help center, you can upload PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Slides, chat with your sources and get answers with inline citations, and turn them into study guides, briefings and mind maps. Its Audio Overviews are the direct equivalent of Coursology's podcasts: AI hosts discuss your sources, in formats such as a Deep Dive or a two-minute Brief, with adjustable length and language. It can also generate flashcards and quizzes with a chosen difficulty, an "Explain" button, and a mode to retry only the cards you missed.
It works with a regular personal Google account, and most school Google accounts have access too. It does not answer questions on a quiz page, and it is not a homework solver; it is a way to learn from material you already have, which is exactly why it is a safe choice under almost any course policy. Google notes that Audio Overviews are AI-generated and can contain inaccuracies, so check anything surprising against the source.
Quizard AI: well-reviewed instant answers
Quizard AI is a screenshot tutor like Coursology's extension, and it names Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Google Classroom as places students use it. Its listing showed 20,000 users and a 5.0 rating from about 3,000 ratings, a much stronger review record than Coursology's 3.6. It offers limited free use, but its website does not publish subscription prices, so check the price inside the extension before paying.
Apex Vision AI: free tier plus practice exams
Apex Vision AI is the best fit if you want both answers and study features without Coursology's monthly price. The free plan gives 30 requests with a refill every 12 hours and needs no card, the most generous published free tier we found. It reads images and diagrams in an in-page panel on any website, and it can generate practice exams and flashcards from your own course material, with a voice tutor and guided hints. Paid plans are metered: $7.99 for 500 requests a month, up to $19.99 for 2,000. The extension had 8,000 users and a 4.9 rating from about 2,000 ratings.
QuizAce: when your questions live on an LMS
Coursology, Solvely, Quizard AI and AnswerAI all work from captures: you select or screenshot the question. That is flexible but clumsy on long quizzes, dropdowns, matching questions and multiple-answer questions that do not fit on one screen. QuizAce reads the question and every answer choice from the quiz page, including images, and explains the answer. It is built and tested for Canvas (Classic + New Quizzes), Blackboard (Ultra + Original), Brightspace, Moodle, Google Forms and Microsoft Forms. On other websites it falls back to a general page reader that has not been tested on that platform, and interactive formats (graphs, drag-and-drop, embedded tools, math input editors) are out of scope. It has no study tools, podcasts or writing features, so it replaces only the answer part of Coursology. Free use is 5 questions a day; paid plans are $6.99 a week, $12.99 a month or $89.99 a year. Being a new listing, it has far fewer reviews than the others.
AnswerAI: the biggest review base
AnswerAI is the extension with the most social proof in this category: 100,000 users and a 4.9 rating from 12.4K ratings on the Chrome Web Store. It works on any website by screenshot or highlight and includes a chat tutor and a writing assistant. Its pricing page shows a free-trial offer rather than a plan list, so read the trial terms before you start.
Matching the alternative to the reason you are leaving
| If you are leaving because... | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| $24.99 a month is too much | Solvely | Same core features, $46.99/yr on iOS |
| You mainly used podcasts, quizzes and flashcards | Gemini Notebook | Audio Overviews, flashcards and quizzes from your uploads, with a Google account |
| The extension feels unreliable | Quizard AI or AnswerAI | 5.0 and 4.9 ratings from thousands of reviews |
| You want free use with a published limit | Apex Vision AI | 30 requests every 12 hours, no card |
| Your practice quizzes are on Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace or Moodle | QuizAce | Reads the whole question from the page |
| Your course bans AI-written posts and essays | Gemini Notebook | Helps you learn the material; does not write submissions |
Before you cancel Coursology
- Export what you made. Notes from the lecture recorder, flashcard sets and uploaded materials live in your Coursology account. Save anything you want to keep before the subscription ends.
- Check how you subscribed. A plan bought through the iPhone app is managed and cancelled in your Apple ID subscriptions, not on coursology.com. A plan bought on the website is managed in your Coursology account.
- Test the replacement on real coursework. Take ten questions you already know the answers to and run them through the free tier of one or two alternatives. Accuracy varies by subject, and self-reported accuracy figures are marketing, not measurements.
- Read the course rules. Your instructor decides where AI help is allowed. Practice quizzes, homework you may get help on, and exam review are the safe uses. Our guide on studying with AI tools explains how to learn from AI explanations instead of copying them.

FAQ
What is Coursology?
Coursology is an AI study app from Coursology LLC. It offers a Chrome extension and iPhone app that answer captured questions with step-by-step explanations, study tools built from your uploads (quizzes, flashcards, AI podcasts, lecture notes) and AI writing features. It is not a course organizer for Udemy or Coursera, despite what some pages say.
How much does Coursology cost?
On October 12, 2026 its pricing page listed $24.99 a month, or $12.50 a month billed for 12 months. The App Store lists the yearly plan at $149.99 and also shows weekly plans at $6.99 and $7.99.
Is there a free alternative to Coursology?
For study tools, Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) generates audio summaries, flashcards and quizzes from your own files with a regular Google account. For answers, Apex Vision AI has a free plan of 30 requests every 12 hours, and several other tools offer smaller free tiers.
Is Coursology or Solvely better?
They cover similar ground. On October 12, 2026 Solvely was cheaper ($46.99 a year on iOS against Coursology's $149.99), its Chrome extension rated higher (4.7 against 3.6) and it had been updated more recently. Coursology has more writing features and AI podcasts. Test both on your own coursework before choosing.
Does Coursology work on Canvas?
Coursology's capture methods work on any web page, including Canvas, because they read what you select or screenshot. It does not integrate with Canvas quizzes specifically. Whether you may use it on a given Canvas assignment is up to your instructor.
Is it allowed to use Coursology's discussion post drafter?
That depends on your course. Many syllabi and school policies require discussion posts and essays to be your own writing and treat submitting AI-generated text as a violation. Check the syllabus, and ask your instructor if AI drafting is permitted before using it.
